I spent a couple of hours last night with a half dozen men. We gather each month to explore some particular matter, especially at the feeling level. Last night’s lively topic concerned our relationship with our mortality. People, needless to say, are afraid of death. But these natural fears are multiplied by a culture saturated with notions of judgment in the afterlife. If I find myself subjected to this relentless current of outside influences – do I have the ability to extract myself from it? Is the current so deep and fused to my thinking that I can’t name the influences, let alone pull the cord from its socket? Can you name some conceptual lenses through which you see the world and from which you’d like to free yourself?
